If a 1970s or 80s Australian kitchen table featured in your childhood, there is a fair chance a glossy ginger-brown jug just like this one was sitting on it, pouring cordial or water at family dinner — and it is every bit as cheerful today.

Made in China for the post-war export trade and loved in Australia ever since, this cylindrical majolica-style relief jug wraps its story right around the body: a classical figure balancing a basket brimming with grapes on one side, a companion gathering fruit among twisting vines and broad leaves on the other, all framed by bands of rolling scrollwork and finished with a handsome square-bracket handle. The translucent honey glaze pools more deeply in the sculpted recesses, throwing the high relief into lovely shifting lowlights. Perfect for retro sangria or juice at a long weekend brunch, or simply filled with wattle or eucalyptus on a cottage sideboard.

Beautifully kept for its fifty-odd years, with its gloss intact and a clean interior, ready for its next forty years of Sunday lunches.

Details

Maker: Unattributed; Chinese export pottery

Design: Majolica-style high-relief grape harvest jug

Era: c. 1970s–1980s

Dimensions: 21 cm high; 14.5 cm handle to spout; 9 cm opening; 11.5 cm base

Weight: 726 g

Material: Glazed earthenware

Marks: Unmarked

Country of origin: China

Condition

Excellent vintage condition.
