Hand-decorated on the island of Rhodes, this joyful Bonis Pottery plate carries a little Greek sunshine with it, the kind of piece that turns a bare stretch of kitchen wall into a story.

Bonis Pottery has been a much-loved Rhodes institution since 1969, when master potter Dorotheos Bonis established his family workshop on the island, and every plate was decorated by hand, one craftsman at a time. Here, a dense cluster of glossy crimson grapes tumbles between olive-green vine leaves, each curve edged in raised, slip-trailed relief you can feel under your fingertips, all set against a hand-swirled creamy ground with the gentle movement of marble. The glaze stops short of the rim, leaving a warm frame of bare terracotta that lets the clay speak for itself. Perfect for bringing colour to a gallery wall, brightening a kitchen corner or anchoring a Mediterranean-inspired vignette, and with its original wire hanger still in place it is ready to hang the moment it arrives.

Beautifully kept across the decades, it remains bright, glossy and full of colour, a happy survivor from the golden age of Greek island studio pottery.

Details

Maker: Bonis Pottery, Rhodes, Greece

Design: Hand-decorated grape and vine relief

Era: c. 1970s–1980s

Dimensions: 18 cm (7 in) diameter

Weight: 269 g

Material: Hand-painted glazed terracotta

Marks: Incised by hand into the clay — "HAND MADE IN RHODES GREECE BY BONIS POTTERY ORIGINAL", together with "100/78"

Country of origin: Greece

Condition

Beautiful vintage condition.
